Salem-Keizer Public Schools is considering closing up to eight elementary schools beginning with the 2027–28 school year, but the district has NOT announced which schools would close.

The district says enrollment has fallen from more than 40,000 students to approximately 35,000 students, leaving resources spread across a school system built for a larger student population. A proposed list of schools is currently scheduled to be released October 13, 2026, with the Salem-Keizer School Board expected to make final closure decisions December 8, 2026.

So if you've seen posts saying that eight specific Salem or Keizer elementary schools are already closing, that's getting ahead of the actual process.

What Is Happening With Salem-Keizer Elementary Schools?

This is a pretty big story for our community, especially for parents with younger kids or anyone thinking about moving within Salem or Keizer.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools recently announced that it has begun a public process that could eventually result in the closure and consolidation of up to eight elementary schools.

Importantly, the closures would not happen during the 2026–27 school year.

Any approved school closures would begin with the 2027–28 school year, giving the district roughly a year to work through the process and prepare affected families and staff.

Why Is Salem-Keizer Considering Closing Schools?

The biggest reason is declining enrollment.

According to Salem-Keizer Public Schools, the district previously served more than 40,000 students across 65 schools. Enrollment is now moving toward approximately 35,000 students.

That is a decrease of roughly 5,000 students.

While fewer students doesn't automatically mean schools have to close, the district says maintaining all of its current buildings and programs is spreading available resources too thin.

The district's goal is to better match its facilities with its current student population while protecting funding and resources for teaching and learning.

This isn't something that will happen overnight, either. Salem-Keizer began reviewing its long-term facility needs before announcing the potential closures, and the process will continue through the upcoming school year.

Which Salem-Keizer Elementary Schools Are Closing?

We don't know yet.

And this is probably the most important part of this entire article.

There is currently no official list of eight elementary schools that are closing.

The district is still developing the criteria it will use when evaluating schools. The School Board is scheduled to adopt updated closure policies and criteria on September 8, 2026.

After those criteria are established, the district plans to evaluate schools and develop its proposed closure list.

The district will apply those criteria and develop a proposed list of elementary schools for closure or consolidation.

The proposed school closure list is scheduled to be released publicly.

There will also be a School Board meeting and opportunity for public comment.

October–November 2026

The district plans to hold community engagement sessions, answer questions, collect feedback and begin discussing potential school boundary changes.

December 8, 2026

The Salem-Keizer School Board is scheduled to make its final decision regarding school closures.

February 2027

The School Board is scheduled to approve school boundary adjustments associated with the changes.

Summer 2027

Families, students and staff at affected schools would prepare for the transition.

September 2027

Students would begin the 2027–28 school year in the newly configured school communities.

Could School Boundaries Change Too?

Yes, and this is something I think families should pay particularly close attention to.

Closing and consolidating schools would mean students from a closed school have to attend another school. That could require changes to elementary attendance boundaries around Salem and Keizer.

The district has already included boundary proposal discussions in its October-November phase and currently expects the School Board to approve final boundary adjustments in February 2027.

So even if your child's elementary school ultimately isn't selected for closure, there is a possibility that some attendance areas could still change.

What Does This Mean If You're Buying a Home in Salem or Keizer?

This is where I think it's especially important for buyers to understand the difference between today's school boundary and a future school boundary.

If you are buying a home specifically because you want to be near a particular school, don't rely exclusively on a real estate website or the school information attached to an online listing.

Always verify the home's current school assignment directly with Salem-Keizer Public Schools.

And over the next year, families considering homes in Salem or Keizer should also be aware that some elementary boundaries could change as this process moves forward.

That doesn't mean you should put a home search on hold. It simply means school assignment is one more piece of information you'll want to independently verify.
