What Is There to Do in Salem & Keizer for Labor Day Weekend 2026?

Looking for things to do in Salem and Keizer over Labor Day weekend? Labor Day weekend runs Friday, September 4 through Monday, September 7, 2026, and there is actually a lot happening locally.

The biggest event is the final weekend of the Oregon State Fair, but you’ll also find the Salem First Friday Art Walk, Salem Saturday Market, Punx in the Park, The People’s Creative Market, the Willow Creek Railroad Labor Day Weekend Open House, winery events, parks, trails and plenty of family-friendly options.

If you don’t want to leave town for the long weekend, you really don’t have to.

Here are some of the best things happening around Salem and Keizer.

1. Spend the Day at the 2026 Oregon State Fair

📍 Oregon State Fair & Exposition Center

📅 August 28 – September 7, 2026

If you only pick one big event for Labor Day weekend, the Oregon State Fair is probably the obvious choice.

Labor Day weekend is actually the final weekend of the 2026 Oregon State Fair, which means Friday through Monday is your last chance this year to enjoy the carnival, animals, exhibits, fair food, competitions and entertainment.

The 2026 fair includes:

• Carnival rides
• Fair food
• Livestock and agricultural exhibits
• 4-H and FFA competitions
• Shopping and local vendors
• Creative Living exhibits
• Live entertainment
• Concerts
• The nightly America250 Live show

The fair is open 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM September 4–6 and 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Labor Day, September 7. Carnival rides begin at 11:00 AM daily.

Current gate admission is:

• Adults ages 13–64: $12
• Kids ages 6–12: $10
• Seniors 65+: $3
• Kids 5 and younger: FREE

2. See a Concert at the Oregon State Fair

If you want to turn the fair into a date night or night out with friends, Labor Day weekend has a surprisingly big concert lineup.

All four shows are scheduled for the L.B. Day Amphitheatre at the Oregon State Fairgrounds.

There is limited first-come, first-served concert seating available with paid fair admission for the concert series, while reserved seating can also be purchased separately. I would definitely check ticket availability before assuming you’ll be able to walk in.

3. Explore Downtown Salem During First Friday Art Walk

📍 Downtown Salem
💲 FREE

If the fair isn’t your thing—or you want something to do beforehand—head downtown for Salem’s First Friday Art Walk.

Downtown businesses participate in an evening centered around Salem’s local art scene, making this an easy date-night option or something to combine with dinner downtown.

The September Art Walk falls perfectly on the first night of Labor Day weekend.

You could easily make an evening out of it:

Art Walk → dinner downtown → Oregon State Fair concert

That feels like a pretty solid Friday night.

4. Start Saturday Morning at the Salem Saturday Market

The Salem Saturday Market is one of those local activities that works whether you have kids, are meeting a friend, want a casual date or just need something to do on a Saturday morning.

The market features more than 200 local vendors with handmade, handcrafted and homegrown products, plus food, live music during the summer season and activities for kids.

Grab coffee, walk through the booths, pick up some produce or flowers and then head to your next Labor Day weekend activity.

5. Check Out Punx in the Park at Salem Riverfront Park

📅 Saturday, September 5
⏰ 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM
📍 Riverfront Park Amphitheater, 200 Water Street NE
💲 FREE

Here’s a more unique option.

Punx in the Park is happening Saturday at Riverfront Park and combines live music with a youth-focused community resource fair.

The event is scheduled to feature:

• Six bands
• Food trucks
• More than 50 resource booths
• Youth speakers
• DIY punk stations
• Free food and clothing for youth

And since you’re already at Riverfront Park, you can walk along the river, visit the playground, ride the carousel or cross the pedestrian bridge toward Minto-Brown.

6. Make It a Riverfront Park + Minto-Brown Day

If you want something free and simple, this is one of my favorite ways to spend part of a long weekend.

Start at Salem Riverfront Park, walk across the Peter Courtney Minto Island Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge and continue into Minto-Brown Island Park.

Minto-Brown has more than 1,200 acres of open and wooded areas, along with walking and biking trails, wildlife areas, picnic spaces and an off-leash dog area. It also connects back toward downtown through Salem’s network of pedestrian bridges.

Bring:

• Bikes or scooters
• A picnic
• Water
• A blanket
• The dog
• Something for the kids to do outside

It’s one of those outings that can cost almost nothing but still fill up an afternoon.

7. Visit Keizer Rapids Park

📍 Keizer Rapids Park — Keizer

I definitely wouldn’t make a Salem-Keizer Labor Day list without something actually in Keizer.

If you want a slower morning or afternoon, Keizer Rapids Park is an easy option for:

• Walking
• Biking
• Letting the kids play
• Taking the dog out
• Having a picnic
• Spending time near the Willamette River
• Enjoying one of the last long weekends of summer

Keizer Rapids is one of those places where you don’t really need an organized event. Pack lunch, bring the kids and stay as long—or as little—as you want.

It’s one of my favorite examples of why living in Keizer can feel a little quieter while still being incredibly close to everything in Salem.

8. Take the Kids to the Willow Creek Railroad Labor Day Weekend Open House

📍 Powerland Heritage Park
3995 Brooklake Road NE, Brooks

This one is just north of Keizer and could be especially fun if you have younger kids who love trains.

The Willow Creek Railroad is hosting a special Labor Day weekend open house Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Powerland Heritage Park.

Willow Creek operates a large 1/8-scale railroad, and the organization has been part of Powerland Heritage Park since the 1970s.

It’s different from your typical park or playground outing and close enough to Salem and Keizer that you don’t have to turn it into a full road trip.

9. Shop Local at The People’s Creative Market

📅 Sunday, September 6
⏰ 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM
📍 Grand Theater area, Downtown Salem
💲 FREE

If you love locally made things, The People’s Creative Market is another good Sunday option.

The monthly market is focused on local artists and includes art, treats, music and community vendors. The September market is scheduled for Sunday afternoon during Labor Day weekend.

This would also be easy to pair with lunch or dinner downtown.

10. Take a Harvest Hike Through a Local Vineyard

📅 Sunday, September 6
⏰ 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
📍 Bryn Mawr Vineyards, West Salem
💲 $75 | $65 for members

For an adults’ Labor Day weekend activity, Bryn Mawr Vineyards is hosting a Harvest Hike with David Sunday morning.

The guided vineyard experience explores the growing season and the vineyard during harvest, followed by a tasting with a cheese and charcuterie pairing.

This is definitely a different Labor Day experience from carnival rides and crowded events—and one that shows off another side of living in the Willamette Valley.

11. Have a Family Day at Riverfront Park, the Carousel & Gilbert House

If you have younger kids and don’t want to spend an entire day at the State Fair, downtown Salem gives you several activities within walking distance of each other.

You can combine:

Salem Riverfront Park

Salem’s Riverfront Carousel

↓

Gilbert House Children’s Museum

↓

Lunch downtown

That makes for a really easy half-day family outing.

Even though that article was originally written for spring break, many of the attractions are great year-round options.

Just make sure to check holiday hours directly with individual businesses before heading out on Labor Day Monday.

12. Let the Kids Burn Off Energy at a Local Park

Not everything you do over a three-day weekend needs tickets, reservations or an itinerary.

Honestly, sometimes the best plan is:

Grab coffee → pick up lunch → go to a park → let the kids run around.

Great for trails, open space, the playground and river access.

Riverfront Park

Perfect if you want to combine outdoor time with downtown Salem.

Minto-Brown Island Park

Best if you want a longer walk or bike ride.

Bush’s Pasture Park

Beautiful for walking, picnics and relaxing closer to downtown.

Willamette Mission State Park

Just north of Keizer and a good choice if you want to feel like you left town without actually going very far.

My Ideal Salem-Keizer Labor Day Weekend Itinerary

If you’re looking at this list thinking, “Okay, but what should we actually do?”, here’s one way I would put the weekend together.

Friday, September 4

Evening:
Head downtown for the First Friday Art Walk from 5:00–8:00 PM, grab dinner and then either call it a night or head to the Oregon State Fair for Jo Dee Messina.

Saturday, September 5

Morning:
Salem Saturday Market from 9:00 AM–2:00 PM

Afternoon:
Walk over toward Riverfront Park and check out Punx in the Park, or spend some time at the carousel and along the river.

Evening:
Oregon State Fair + Uncle Kracker.

Sunday, September 6

Morning:
Families: Willow Creek Railroad Open House.

Adults/date day: Harvest Hike at Bryn Mawr Vineyards.

Afternoon:
The People’s Creative Market in downtown Salem.

Evening:
Head to the Oregon State Fair for rides, food and Twisted Sister featuring Sebastian Bach.

Labor Day — Monday, September 7

Keep Monday simple.

Start with a walk at Keizer Rapids Park or Minto-Brown, grab lunch somewhere local and then head to the final day of the Oregon State Fair.

“Weird Al” Yankovic performs at 4:00 PM, making that a pretty fun way to officially say goodbye to summer.

Trying to keep the weekend inexpensive?

You definitely can.

Some of the best free or no-admission options include:

• Bush’s Pasture Park
• Walking or biking Salem’s pedestrian bridges

That gives you plenty to do without spending hundreds of dollars entertaining the family all weekend.

What If You’re New to Salem or Keizer?

Long weekends like this are actually a great time to explore different parts of the area.

Spend one morning in downtown Salem.

Drive through South Salem.

Walk around West Salem.

Spend an afternoon at Keizer Rapids Park.

Head north toward Brooks.

It gives you a much better feel for the community than simply driving through neighborhoods.

Labor Day Weekend in Salem & Keizer: Final Thoughts

Labor Day weekend always feels a little bittersweet.

Summer isn’t technically over yet, but school is starting, evenings are getting shorter and you can definitely feel fall getting closer.

That’s part of why I love taking advantage of the long weekend.

Whether you want to spend the day eating fair food and riding rides, listen to live music, wander through a farmers market, take the kids to see trains, walk along the Willamette River or simply have a picnic at Keizer Rapids Park, there are plenty of ways to stay local and still make the weekend feel special.

And honestly, that’s one of my favorite things about living here.

You don’t always have to drive to Portland or plan some huge trip to have something fun to do. Sometimes the best weekends are right here in Salem and Keizer.
